MTR Auto Remediation Keeps Failing
Issue Overview : Some Microsoft Teams Rooms systems may show the following alert: “Auto Remediation was unable to resolve this issue”
Common Causes
The issue is commonly related to:
- Incorrect system date/time
- Windows Time Service issues
- Network or NTP server communication problems
- Failed Windows updates
- Corrupted Teams Room app cache
- Outdated MTR firmware/software
- Device authentication problems
Step-by-Step Resolution Guide
Step 1 – Reboot the MTR System
Perform a complete reboot of:
- MTR compute device
- Touch console
- Connected peripherals (if applicable)
After reboot:
- Wait 10–15 minutes
- Check if the alert clears automatically
Step 2 – Verify Date, Time, and Time Zone
Time drift is one of the most common causes.
Check:
- Open Windows Settings
- Navigate to:
- Time & Language → Date & Time
- Confirm:
- Correct Time Zone
- Automatic time enabled
- Automatic time zone enabled
Then manually sync:
Click:
- “Sync now”
Step 3 – Restart Windows Time Service
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
net stop w32time
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
If successful, you should receive:
“The command completed successfully”
Step 4 – Verify Internet & NTP Connectivity
Ensure the MTR system can reach:
- Microsoft 365 services
- NTP/time servers
Check:
- Firewall restrictions
- Proxy configuration
- VLAN/network segmentation
- DNS resolution
You can test connectivity using:
ping time.windows.com
Step 5 – Check Windows Updates
Outdated Windows builds can cause remediation failures.
Navigate to:
Settings → Windows Update
Then:
- Install pending updates
- Restart the system
- Re-check Teams Admin Center health status
Step 6 – Verify MTR Application Version
Older Microsoft Teams Rooms app versions may fail remediation checks.
Check Version:
- Open Teams Admin Settings
- Review:
- MTR app version
- Firmware version
Compare against Microsoft-supported versions.
Step 7 – Clear Teams Room App Cache (If Required)
If issues persist:
- Sign out of Teams Rooms
- Clear Teams cache directories
- Restart the system
- Sign back in
Note: Perform this only during a maintenance window.
Step 8 – Check Device Health in Teams Admin Center
In the Microsoft Teams Admin Center:
Review:
- Device health alerts
- Sign-in status
- Time synchronization warnings
- Auto remediation history
This helps identify recurring failures.
Step 9 – Run Manual Time Synchronization
If time drift continues:
Open Administrator CMD and type the below
w32tm /query /status
Then:
w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual /manualpeerlist:"time.windows.com"
w32tm /resync
Step 10 – Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If remediation continues failing after all checks:
Recommended:
- Backup configuration
- Perform MTR recovery/factory reset
- Reinstall latest supported MTR image
Recommended Best Practices
- Keep Windows and MTR versions aligned with Microsoft support matrix
- Avoid unsupported Windows feature upgrades
- Reboot MTR systems regularly during maintenance windows
- Monitor device health weekly
- Validate NTP synchronization across all meeting room devices
When to Escalate
Escalate to Microsoft or vendor support if:
- Multiple devices fail simultaneously
- Time drift returns repeatedly
- Devices fail sign-in after remediation
- Teams Rooms app crashes continue
- Firmware updates fail repeatedly
