Poly Studio X Instability After Firmware Upgrade
Overview : If your Poly Studio X devices have been acting erratically — freezing mid-call, randomly rebooting, dropping connections, or becoming completely unresponsive after a recent firmware update — you are not alone. This has been a recurring frustration for IT teams and AV managers managing Poly Studio X fleets across meeting rooms.
Problem 1 — Device is freezing or restarting on its own
This is the most common issue. Try these steps in order.
|
1 |
Restart the device manually Unplug the power cable from the back of the Poly Studio X. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait 2 minutes for it to fully start. |
|
2 |
Set up a nightly automatic reboot Open a web browser on any computer. Type the IP address of your Poly device into the address bar and press Enter. |
|
ℹ Not sure of the IP address? Check your TV/display screen — it's usually shown at the bottom of the home screen, or ask your IT team. |
|
3 |
Log in to the device settings Enter your admin username and password. (Default is usually: admin / admin — or ask your IT team.) |
|
4 |
Find the reboot schedule setting Go to: General Settings → Power Management → Scheduled Reboot |
|
5 |
Turn on the scheduled reboot Set a reboot time for late at night when the room is not in use (e.g. 2:00 AM). Save the settings. |
|
✅ Done! The device will now automatically restart each night, which keeps it stable. This is a short-term fix — continue to the next section for a permanent solution. |
Problem 2 — Fix the software version (permanent fix)
The most reliable fix is to switch your device back to a stable software version (version 4.5.2). This reverses the problematic update.
|
1 |
Open the device settings in your browser Type the device IP address into your browser and log in as admin (same as above). |
|
2 |
Go to Device Management Navigate to: General Settings → Device Management |
|
3 |
Find the "Download Update From" option Look for a dropdown or field labelled "Download Update From" or "Update Source". Select Custom Server URL. |
|
4 |
Enter the stable software address Copy and paste the following address exactly into the URL field: |
|
https://swupdate.lens.poly.com/polyos/4.5.2/454005 |
|
5 |
Start the update Click "Check for Update" or "Apply". The device will download and install the stable version. This takes about 5–10 minutes. |
|
6 |
Wait for the device to restart The device will reboot automatically. Do not unplug it during this process. Wait until the home screen appears. |
|
7 |
Confirm the version Go to: More Settings → Device Settings → About You should see version 4.5.2 listed. |
|
✅ Your device is now on the stable version. The freezing and restarting should stop. Monitor it for 24–48 hours to confirm. |
oblem 3 — Touch screen / controller not responding
If the touchpad (TC8 or TC10) stopped working after the update, it may be on a different software version to the main device.
|
1 |
Get a USB stick Use any standard USB flash drive (FAT32 format). If unsure, a regular USB stick from a computer shop will work. |
|
2 |
Download the touch controller update Ask your IT team or support contact to download the correct TC8/TC10 firmware file and save it onto the USB stick. |
|
3 |
Plug the USB stick into the Studio X Insert the USB stick into one of the USB ports on the Poly Studio X video bar. |
|
4 |
Accept the update prompt A message will appear on screen asking if you want to update the touch controller. Tap or click "Accept". |
|
5 |
Wait for it to finish The update takes a few minutes. The touchpad will restart automatically when done. |
|
✅ The touch controller should now respond normally and match the video bar version. |
Problem 4 — Device completely unresponsive (won't turn on properly)
If the device will not respond at all after a failed update, try a factory reset using the pinhole button.
|
⚠ A factory reset will erase all settings on the device. Only do this if the device is completely unusable and all other steps have failed. |
|
1 |
Locate the pinhole reset button Look for a small hole on the back or underside of the Poly Studio X device. |
|
2 |
Insert a pin or paperclip Straighten a paperclip or use a SIM ejector tool. Insert it gently into the pinhole. |
|
3 |
Hold for 10 seconds Press and hold the pin in the hole for 10 seconds. The device LEDs will glow white — this is normal. |
|
4 |
Wait for the reset to complete Do not unplug the device. The reset takes 3–5 minutes. The device will restart when finished. |
|
5 |
Set it up again The device will start as if brand new. Follow the on-screen setup steps, then apply the stable software version from Problem 2 above. |
|
⚠ If the device still does not work after a factory reset, contact HP Poly Support. Do not attempt any further updates yourself. |
When to call for help
Contact your IT team or HP Poly Support if:
- The device shows 'Qualcomm QDLoader 9008' in Windows Device Manager — this means it needs specialist recovery.
- The device is still unstable 48 hours after completing Problem 2 (software downgrade).
- More than one device in your building is having the same problem.
- The factory reset in Problem 4 did not restore normal operation.
- The device is under warranty — HP may replace it at no cost.
